Carvacrol: Health benefits from aromatic herbs (oregano, thyme)

Carvacrol is a phenolic monoterpenoid found in various essential oils. Oregano, thyme, and bergamot contain carvacrol. It boasts a range of beneficial properties for potential clinical applications. This compound has shown antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer activities. It showed antimicrobial efficacy against food-borne pathogens like Escherichia coli and Salmonella. It is attributed to a unique combination of its chemical characteristics. Carvacrol, often used alongside thymol (another phenolic monoterpenoid found in these oils), exhibits high antioxidant activity and has been employed as a dietary additive to enhance the antioxidant status in animals (I.E. in poultry nutrition) Preclinical studies suggest promising anticancer properties of carvacrol, particularly in breast, liver, and lung carcinomas, through (proapoptotic) mechanisms involving elimination of DNA abnormalities. However, despite a well-defined toxicological profile, the lack of human trials hinders conclusive

Polyphenol-Rich Diets Associated with Slower Biological Aging: Insights from a Clinical Trial

A study, published in September 2023, explored the impact of different diets on biological aging, which is a measure of how fast your body is aging based on DNA methylation.  They used various DNA methylation-based aging clocks to assess this in 256 participants with abdominal obesity or dyslipidemia over an 18-month period. The participants were divided into three diet groups:  one following healthy dietary guidelines,  one on a Mediterranean (MED) diet, and  one on a polyphenol-rich, low-red/processed meat Green-MED diet.  The Green-MED diet included walnuts, green tea, and Mankai, a green plant, with higher polyphenol content. The researchers found that participants who adhered more closely to the Green-MED diet had a slower rate of biological aging, as indicated by specific methylation aging clocks known as Li and Hannum methylation age.  This slowing of biological aging was associated with increased intake of Mankai and green tea , and it corresponded with higher levels of polyph

Health Benefits of Carbamates, Carvacrol and Lactobacillus

Carbamate and Alzheimer Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder that mostly affects older people. It gets worse over time and causes problems with memory and thinking. We still don't fully understand why Alzheimer's disease happens, but it seems to be caused by a lot of different things going wrong. There are some important signs that we often see in the brains of people with Alzheimer's. These include the loss of certain brain cells, the buildup of abnormal substances like plaques, problems with metals in the brain, changes in a protein called tau, too much stress inside brain cells, swelling and problems with the immune system in the brain, and issues with the energy centers in brain cells. Current treatments, right now, is based in some medicines that can help with the symptoms of Alzheimer's, but they don't fix the main problems in the brain.  These medicines are called donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine, and memantine. There's a need for better drug

Catch of the Day: Hypnosis, Fibromyalgia, IBD, Gut Microbiota, Aging

Hypnosis as a Tool for Managing Fibromyalgia Pain "Harnessing Hypnosis: A Promising Approach to Tackle Fibromyalgia Pain" Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a complex condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and emotional challenges. The exact cause of FMS is not fully understood, but there's evidence suggesting a link between childhood/adulthood abuse or neglect and its development. Treating FMS can be difficult due to its resistance to most treatments. However, a recent review suggests that hypnotherapy, a psychological intervention, could be effective in managing FMS pain. This technique aims to reduce pain, fatigue, sleep problems, anxiety, and depression by using hypnosis to address emotional conflicts and unresolved traumas associated with FMS. This non-invasive approach might offer relief to those struggling with fibromyalgia. De Benedittis G. The Challenge of Fibromyalgia Efficacy of Hypnosis in Alleviating the Invisibl

Exploring the Link Between Circadian Rhythms, Longevity, and Wearable Data: Insights and Future Directions

A recent study in NHANES 2011–2014 explores the potential connection between disruptions in circadian rhythms, measured using wearable devices, and their impact on health outcomes and longevity. The study analyzes data from 7,297 U.S. adults collected through wearable accelerometers as a novel digital biomarker for longevity. Five distinct clusters were identified based on activity profiles: "High activity," "Low activity," "Mild circadian rhythm (CR) disruption," "Severe CR disruption," and "Very low activity." The findings reveal that young adults with extreme circadian rhythm disturbance exhibit higher white blood cell counts and accelerated biological aging. Older adults with circadian disruption are associated with increased systemic inflammation indexes, advanced biological aging, and higher all-cause mortality risk. The research underscores the importance of circadian alignment for longevity at all ages and suggests that wearable

Study: Pets can boost your brain power, slow cognitive decline

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - New research is showing that having a pet could boost your brain power. A recent study found that it can delay memory loss and other kinds of cognitive decline. It seemed to be especially helpful for exercising your verbal memory, like memorizing a list of words. One example is all the nicknames people come up with for their pets. And it wasn't just true for people with cats and dogs. Some participants also owned rabbits, hamsters, birds, fish, and reptiles. Study authors say you have to have a pet for five years or more to see improvement, but those who did in the study had a cognitive decline rate of 1.2 points less over six years than those who didn't.
