Neurofeedback prueba ser efectivo contra depresión

Técnica de retroalimentación de estados cerebrales en tiempo real demuestra ser efectiva en el tratamiento de la depresión, sugiere un estudio de la Universidad de Cardiff.

Científicos de la Universidad de Cardiff en Gales se mostraron entusiastas sobre las posibilidades que tiene el uso de una técnica conocida como neurofeedback (neurorretroalimentación) en el tratamiento de la depresión, luego de realizar un experimento. El neurofeedback funciona básicamente mostrando imágenes de su propio cerebro a una persona conforme realiza algún tipo de tarea o sostiene algún pensamiento específico. La idea es que al ver directamente los efectos que tiene una actividad o un pensamiento en su cerebro la persona pueda aprender a controlar su mente para propiciar efectos deseados. En el estudio los investigadores usaron escáneres de resonancia magnética para mostrar a un grupo de 8 personas como su cerebro reaccionaba a imágenes positivas. Después de 4 sesiones este grupo de pacientes que padecían algún tipo de depresión mostró una mejoría significativa. El otro grupo al que se le pidió que pensaran positivamente pero al que no se le mostró imágenes magnéticas de su propio cerebro no obtuvo dichos beneficios. Los investigadores creen que las resonancias magnéticas permitieron a los participantes descubrir, vía prueba y error, qué imágenes positivas funcionan con mayor efectividad. Cerca del 20% de las personas atraviesa algún episodio de depresión durante su vida y una tercera parte de ellas no responde a los tratamientos estándar. Los investigadores de la Universidad de Cardiff creen que el neurofeedback podría proveer una alternativa interesante para el tratamiento, especialmente entre personas interesadas en nuevas forma de interactuar y controlar su cerebro. Existen numerosos aparatos de neurofeedback que pueden ser adquiridos en Internet e incluso algunas apps para dispositivos móviles que cumplen con la función básica de proveer al usuario retroalimentación en tiempo real sobre las modulaciones de sus estados cerebrales.

Exploring the Link Between Circadian Rhythms, Longevity, and Wearable Data: Insights and Future Directions

A recent study in NHANES 2011–2014 explores the potential connection between disruptions in circadian rhythms, measured using wearable devices, and their impact on health outcomes and longevity. The study analyzes data from 7,297 U.S. adults collected through wearable accelerometers as a novel digital biomarker for longevity. Five distinct clusters were identified based on activity profiles: "High activity," "Low activity," "Mild circadian rhythm (CR) disruption," "Severe CR disruption," and "Very low activity."
