La energía del cerebro es restaurada durante el sueño

En las etapas iniciales del sueño, los niveles de energía aumentan dramáticamente en las regiones del cerebro que se muestran activas durante las horas de vigilia, según nueva investigación. Estos resultados sugieren que un aumento de la energía celular puede reponer los procesos del cerebro que se necesitan para funcionar normalmente mientras se está despierto.
Hasta el momento, la evidencia de los procesos biológicos reales que ocurren durante el sueño había sido difícil de alcanzar. Según los especialistas: “Nuestro descubrimiento tiene que ver con uno de los enigmas de la biología: la función del sueño“.
Los autores midieron los niveles de trifosfato de adenosina (ATP), en las ratas y encontraron que los niveles de ATP en cuatro principales regiones del cerebro normalmente activo durante la vigilia aumentaron cuando las ratas estaban en el sueño no-REM, pero fueron acompañadas por una disminución global de la actividad cerebral . Cuando los animales estaban despiertos, los niveles de ATP se mantuvieron estables.
Los autores concluyen que el sueño es necesario para este aumento de energía ATP, ya que mantener las ratas despierta impidió el incremento. El aumento de la energía puede entonces ser reparador.

Exploring the Link Between Circadian Rhythms, Longevity, and Wearable Data: Insights and Future Directions

A recent study in NHANES 2011–2014 explores the potential connection between disruptions in circadian rhythms, measured using wearable devices, and their impact on health outcomes and longevity. The study analyzes data from 7,297 U.S. adults collected through wearable accelerometers as a novel digital biomarker for longevity. Five distinct clusters were identified based on activity profiles: "High activity," "Low activity," "Mild circadian rhythm (CR) disruption," "Severe CR disruption," and "Very low activity."
