"Esta dieta enfatiza la ingesta de verduras, frutas, pescado, aceite de oliva, un menor consumo de carne, vino con moderación y granos no refinados", señaló en un comunicado de prensa de la American Society for Nutrition la Dra. Christy Tangney, autora principal, del Centro Médico de la Universidad de Rush, en Chicago.

En lugar de pedir a la gente que evite ciertos alimentos, el estudio encontró datos de que "los adultos mayores de 65 años deben incluir más aceite de oliva, legumbres, frutos secos y semillas en su dieta para mejorar sus periodos de recuerdo y otras habilidades cognitivas, como identificar símbolos y números", apuntó Tangney.

En el estudio participaron 4,000 adultos de 65 años o más a quienes se dio una serie de pruebas para examinar sus habilidades cognitivas (o del pensamiento) cada tres años durante un periodo de quince años. Los que puntuaron más alto en el seguimiento de una dieta mediterránea eran los menos propensos a sufrir declive cognitivo, según encontraron los autores del estudio.

"[También] queremos que los adultos mayores recuerden que la actividad física es una parte importante del mantenimiento de sus habilidades cognitivas", añadió Tangney.

Se tenía programado presentar los hallazgos el lunes en la reunión de Biología Experimental 2010 en Anaheim, California.
