Respirar en forma lenta podría ayudar a aliviar el dolor

 investigadores sostuvieron que sus resultados muestran que la respiración lenta podría servir para aliviar el dolor, pero también subrayan que la actitud de una persona tiene efectos sobre la percepción del sufrimiento.

Controlar la respiración, haciéndola más lenta, podría reducir significativamente la sensación de dolor.
Los investigadores del Instituto Neurológico Barrow, del Hospital y Centro Médico St. Joseph, afirmaron que incluso las personas con dolor crónico sintieron alivio al respirar lentamente, excepto cuando sentían tristeza o depresión. Publicaron sus resultados en PAIN, la revista de la Asociación Internacional para el Estudio del Dolor (IASP).
QUÉ ES EL DOLOR
El dolor es una sensación que desencadena el sistema nervioso ante un daño en el cuerpo o ante la posibilidad de que ocurra. Aunque es una experiencia percibida como desagradable, el dolor ayuda a quien lo sufre a darse cuenta de que tiene un problema que requiere su atención. Por ejemplo, si una persona apoya la mano sobre una superficie demasiado caliente, el dolor le advierte rápidamente que la retire antes de que la herida en la piel ocurra o sea mayor.
De igual manera, una molestia en cualquier parte del cuerpo avisa que es hora de visitar al médico para ver qué puede estar pasando.
Sin embargo el dolor puede volverse crónico, es decir durar semanas o años. En esos casos, se puede recurrir a herramientas como fármacos, acupuntura o incluso cirugías que lo alivien.
RESPIRANDO PARA NO SUFRIR
Los científicos de Estados Unidos trabajaron con dos grupos de mujeres de entre 45 y 65 años. La mitad de ellas no tenía problemas de salud mientras que la otra mitad sufría de fibromialgia, una patología que causa dolor crónico en varias partes del cuerpo, como los músculos y las articulaciones.
Todas las mujeres recibieron pulsos de calor moderadamente dolorosos en sus manos mientras respiraban normalmente y, posteriormente, cuando lo hacían más lentamente. En ambos momentos cada una debió definir la intensidad del dolor, cuan incómoda la hizo sentir y cómo afectó su estado de ánimo.

A recent study in NHANES 2011–2014 explores the potential connection between disruptions in circadian rhythms, measured using wearable devices, and their impact on health outcomes and longevity.
