NUEVA YORK (Reuters Health) - En el verano, tomar unos minutos diarios de sol al mediodía eleva el nivel de vitamina D a una cantidad suficiente, pero no óptima, reveló un estudio en el Reino Unido.

La producción de vitamina D en la piel por la exposición a los rayos ultravioletas del sol es la fuente principal del nutriente, que es deficiente en la mayoría de los alimentos, explicó el equipo de la doctora Lesley E. Rhodes, del Salford Royal NHS Foundation Hospital, en Manchester.

La vitamina D es necesaria para tener huesos y músculos saludables, y también existen evidencias de que reduciría el riesgo de desarrollar cáncer, hipertensión, diabetes y otras enfermedades.

Las autoridades británicas dicen que "las exposiciones casuales a la luz solar en el verano" permitirán que el cuerpo produzca cantidades adecuadas de vitamina D. Pero recomiendan limitar la exposición solar a un período corto.

Para comprobar la duración necesaria de la exposición, el equipo sometió a 109 hombres y mujeres blancos a una luz equivalente a 13 minutos de sol del mediodía en verano, tres veces por semana y durante seis semanas. Los participantes usaron shorts y remeras durante los baños de sol.

El estudio se realizó en invierno, cuando se recibe muy poca vitamina D de la luz solar, para concentrarse en los efectos de esos baños. Todos los participantes consumían poca vitamina D y ninguno tomaba suplementos.

El nivel en sangre promedio de vitamina D aumentó de 18 a 28 nanogramos por mililitro. Estudios recientes habían sugerido que un nivel a partir de los 20 nanogramos por mililitro es suficiente y uno a partir de los 32 nanogramos por mililitro es "óptimo".

Con esos resultados, el equipo predijo que con esa cantidad de exposición solar, el 90 por ciento de los blancos menores de 65 años en Manchester tendría niveles de vitamina D suficientes y el 26 por ciento, óptimos.

A recent study in NHANES 2011–2014 explores the potential connection between disruptions in circadian rhythms, measured using wearable devices, and their impact on health outcomes and longevity.
