Intense exercise not only helps burn fat, but also avoid fatty foods: Study

Washington: Performing intense exercises not only burns fat but can keep a person away from eating fatty foods, a new study finds. Researchers at Washington State University found in a trial of mice that those who regularly exercised were able to avoid cues to eat unhealthy foods. The findings indicate that exercise can improve a person's discipline and decision making, and prevent them from making poor dietary decisions. Researchers can not determine why this is the case, but they are hopeful that they may have uncovered a new trick to help dieters around the world. "A really important part of maintaining a diet is to have some brain power the ability to say 'no, I may be craving that, but I'm going to abstain," said Dr. Travis Brown, an author of the study and neuroscience researcher. "Exercise could not only be beneficial physically for weight loss but also mentally to gain control over cravings for unhealthy foods," he added. Researchers, who publish...

Health Benefits of Yogurt

Humans have consumed yogurt for hundreds of years. It’s very nutritious, and eating it regularly may boost several aspects of your health. For example, yogurt has been found to reduce the risk of heart disease and osteoporosis, as well as aid in weight management. What is yogurt and how is it made? Yogurt is a popular dairy product made by the bacterial fermentation of milk. The bacteria used to make yogurt are called “yogurt cultures,” which ferment lactose, the natural sugar found in milk. This process produces lactic acid, a substance that causes milk proteins to curdle, giving yogurt its unique flavor and texture. Yogurt can be made from all types of milk. Varieties made from skim milk are considered fat-free, whereas whole milk options are considered full fat. Plain yogurt without added colorants is a white, thick liquid with a tangy flavor. However, most commercial brands contain added ingredients, such as sugar and artificial flavors. Here are six science-based health benef...

After Searching 12 Years for Bipolar Disorder’s Cause, a Team Concludes It Has Many

A long-term study in more than 1,100 people yields a new seven-factor framework that could help patients, clinicians and researchers. Nearly 6 million Americans have bipolar disorder, and most have probably wondered why. After more than a decade of studying over 1,100 of them in-depth, a University of Michigan team has an answer — or rather, seven answers. In fact, the team says, no one genetic change, chemical imbalance or life event lies at the heart of every case of the mental health condition once known as manic depression. Rather, every patient’s experience with bipolar disorder varies from that of others with the condition. But all of their experiences include features that fall into seven classes of phenotypes, or characteristics that can be observed, the team reports in a new paper in the International Journal of Epidemiology. The team, from U-M’s Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Program, collected and analyzed tens of thousands of data points over years about the genetics, e...
