Montar en bicicleta no sólo reduce el gasto en transporte y aumenta los beneficios para la salud del usuario.

La investigación realizada por un grupo de expertos del Instituto Global de la Salud en la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison, ha concluido que utilizar la bicicleta para distancias cortas como el trabajo puede ayudar a ahorrar hasta 7.000 millones de dólares y evitar 1.100 muertes al año.

Según sus cálculos, sólo 3.800 millones de dólares se ahorrarían de tratamientos para pacientes con problemas como obesidad y afecciones coronarias.

Tratar de sustituir el automóvil o el autobús para distancias cortas durante los seis meses de buen tiempo, por la bicicleta, es una solución que no se suele discutir como alternativa de transporte pero que, según Jonathan Path, director del Instituto Global de la Salud, sería beneficiosa para todos.

“Hablamos sobre los costos de cambiar los sistemas de energía, el costo de los combustibles alternativos, pero raramente hablamos de este tipo de beneficios”, señaló.

El estudio, publicado en la revista Environmental Health, se ha centrado en las once áreas metropolitanas más pobladas de la zona medio oeste de Estados Unidos, para analizar los beneficios que podrían resultar de eliminar los viajes cortos en automóvil, pero podría extrapolarse a otros lugares.

Sweetener Reformulated Biscuits: A Step Towards Blood Glucose Control
