El País 2 JUL 2012 - 00:03 CET Cuando se descuentan los efectos perniciosos de todos esos hábitos, resulta que el café alarga la vida: un 10% en los hombres y un 15% en las mujeres. Hay que tomarlo con moderación. Los científicos sugieren dos cafés americanos al día, lo que no suena muy excitante. Y, de forma inesperada, da igual tomarlo normal o descafeinado. El café tiene un millar de compuestos, y sus efectos saludables no parecen deberse a la cafeína, sino a alguno de los otros.

El malditismo del café tiene también algo de manía histórica. Descubierto en Etiopía hace 1.200 años —gracias a una cabra propensa a experimentar con los estimulantes, según la leyenda—, el café se propagó por el mundo a la misma velocidad que su represión por las autoridades religiosas o de otro tipo. Un bebedizo que sabe bien, huele a gloria y despeja el ánimo se convierte de inmediato en un sospechoso, porque contradice el principio de que hemos venido a este mundo a sufrir. La predicción del cómico no va camino de cumplirse para el tabaco, pero tal vez sí para el café. Después de medio siglo de tabarra facultativa sobre los riesgos abominables que comporta ese brebaje, un estudio de Harvard con 400.000 personas, financiado por el Gobierno norteamericano y publicado el miércoles en el New England Jornal of Medicine, acaba de mostrar que el café alarga la vida. ¿Cómo es posible que los médicos te prohibieran el café al menor pestañeo de la presión sistólica y que ahora, de repente, te lo vayan a tener que recetar, o poco menos? Una razón técnica es que los beneficios del café se camuflaban hasta ahora bajo una hojarasca de trampas estadísticas. Los que toman café viven menos que los abstinentes, pero el culpable no es el café, sino la copa y el puro. Los aficionados al brebaje lo suelen ser también al tabaco, el alcohol y el chuletón, y tienden a ser alérgicos a toda fruta, verdura o aparato de gimnasia.

Exploring the Link Between Circadian Rhythms, Longevity, and Wearable Data: Insights and Future Directions

A recent study in NHANES 2011–2014 explores the potential connection between disruptions in circadian rhythms, measured using wearable devices, and their impact on health outcomes and longevity. The study analyzes data from 7,297 U.S. adults collected through wearable accelerometers as a novel digital biomarker for longevity. Five distinct clusters were identified based on activity profiles: "High activity," "Low activity," "Mild circadian rhythm (CR) disruption," "Severe CR disruption," and "Very low activity."
