Descubrimiento de un gen asociado a trastorno de la atención e hiperactividad. Implicancias terapéuticas

Se descubre una asociación entre el TDAH y el gen Latrophilina 3 (LPHN3), lo que abre una vía para el desarrollo de tratamientos farmacológicos más eficaces.



MOL PSYCHIATRY. 2010 FEB [noticias] [17/2/2010] Investigadores de los Institutos Nacionales de la Salud en Bethesda (Estados Unidos) han descubierto un vínculo entre el trastorno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad (TDAH) y el gen Latrophilina 3 (LPHN3).

Según los investigadores, la misma variante del gen LPHN3 está también asociada con la respuesta a la medicación estimulante, lo que podría ayudar a identificar a aquellas personas que responderían de forma positiva a esta terapia y al futuro desarrollo de tratamienGuardar como borradortos farmacológicos más eficaces para el TDAH.

Los científicos, dirigidos por Maximilian Muenke y Mauricio Arcos-Burgos, realizaron un estudio de vinculación amplia de genoma de 18 familias afectadas por el TDAH en una población aislada de Colombia con el objetivo de estudiar las causas genéticas del trastorno.

Los resultados mostraron una asociación entre el TDAH y una región genómica en LPHN3. Los investigadores replicaron entonces estos resultados en muestras de cinco poblaciones de otras áreas del mundo, incluyendo Alemania, Noruega, España y otras dos de Estados Unidos.

Los estudios de imágenes cerebrales confirmaron más tarde esta conexión, mostrando que las variantes de LPHN3 se expresaban en regiones cerebrales asociadas a la atención y la actividad y que están asociadas con la respuesta a la medicación estimulante.

El vínculo entre TDAH y LPHN3 sugiere nuevos mecanismos moleculares asociados a TDAH, que podrían ayudar al desarrollo de tratamientos farmacológicos que se dirijan a nuevos genes y mecanismos neurales.

La conexión entre LPHN3 y la respuesta a la medicación estimulante podría ayudar a identificar a aquellas personas susceptibles al TDAH y a aquellos más propensos a responder de forma positiva a la medicación estimulante como tratamiento.

Multivitamins Can Improve Memory in Older Adults

A recent clinical trial called COSMOS suggests that taking multivitamins may improve memory and slow cognitive aging in older adults.  The trial involved 3,500 participants aged 60 or older and found that the multivitamin group performed better on memory tests compared to the placebo group.  The benefits were equivalent to slowing age-related memory loss by about 3 years.  The study also noted that individuals with a history of cardiovascular disease experienced the greatest benefits.  It's important to remember that multivitamins should not replace a healthy lifestyle, and high doses of isolated micronutrients may not provide the same benefits.  The trial found that multivitamins were safe to use, and further research is needed to understand who will benefit the most and the underlying mechanisms involved.
