Cuanto más tiempo llevaban los participantes meditando, mayor era el plegamiento de una zona del cerebro denominada "corteza insular". 

Las personas que practican meditación durante muchos años refuerzan las conexiones de su cerebro y presentan una mayor cantidad de plegamientos en la corteza del mismo, según indica un estudio publicado en la revista Frontiers in Human Neuroscience. Estas características se relacionan con una mayor memoria y con la habilidad para procesar información y tomar decisiones. Además, el trabajo demuestra la plasticidad del cerebro, es decir, su capacidad para adaptarse a los cambios ambientales.


En el estudio se incluyeron tanto a personas que llevaban más de 20 años practicando meditación como a otras que no lo hacían. Los investigadores, de la Universidad de California (UCLA), compararon las imágenes de resonancia magnética de los cerebros de los voluntarios y midieron los plegamientos de la corteza. Además de encontrar diferencias entre los grupos, los científicos observaron que, cuanto más tiempo llevaban los participantes meditando, mayor era el plegamiento de una zona del cerebro denominada "corteza insular". Esta área se relaciona con el sistema límbico y las emociones, y está relacionada con los procesos afectivos y con la consciencia.
"Los meditadores son considerados unos maestros en la introspección y la consciencia, así que los datos obtenidos son lógicos", indica Eileen Luders, uno de los autores, quién sin embargo afirma que también hay que tener en cuenta que aspectos genéticos y otros factores ambientales pueden contribuir a los resultados observados.

Exploring the Link Between Circadian Rhythms, Longevity, and Wearable Data: Insights and Future Directions

A recent study in NHANES 2011–2014 explores the potential connection between disruptions in circadian rhythms, measured using wearable devices, and their impact on health outcomes and longevity. The study analyzes data from 7,297 U.S. adults collected through wearable accelerometers as a novel digital biomarker for longevity. Five distinct clusters were identified based on activity profiles: "High activity," "Low activity," "Mild circadian rhythm (CR) disruption," "Severe CR disruption," and "Very low activity." The findings reveal that young adults with extreme circadian rhythm disturbance exhibit higher white blood cell counts and accelerated biological aging. Older adults with circadian disruption are associated with increased systemic inflammation indexes, advanced biological aging, and higher all-cause mortality risk. The research underscores the importance of circadian alignment for longevity at all ages and suggests that wearable
